God's Little Devotional Book - Story #4
One day Dr. Bernie S. Siegel, author of Peace, Love and Healing, got a call from a policeman friend, who began talking about all the horrors of the world and about the despair of his own life. He finally said morbidly” I have nothing to live for. I just called to say good-bye.”
“Good-bye?” asked Siegel. “What do you mean?”
The friend said in a monotone voice, “I’m going to commit suicide. I just called to say good-bye.”
Without a pause, Siegel quipped, “Well, if you do, I’ll never speak to you again!”
Astounded—and jolted from his deep malaise—the policeman started to chuckle and then broke into laughter. Instead of shooting himself as he had planned, he decided to go see his old friend, Bernie, for a heart-to-heart chat.
It’s very, very hard to remain angry at someone who makes you laugh.
It’s hard to remain sad around a person who makes you giggle.
It’s extremely difficult to hold a grudge against a person who brings a smile to your face It’s almost impossible to stay frightened if you’re with a person who causes you to chuckle.
Laughter is a tie that binds hearts together.
