ASK MARILYN

A relative was considering selling an antique piano, and we were guessing how much it might weigh. I jokingly suggested that he put a bathroom scale under each leg and total the weights. Everybody laughed. But then we began to wonder: Would this work?

Yes, it would! You can just set each piano leg on an ordinary bathroom scale. (They don’t need to be identical.) The combined readings will indicate the total weight. By the way, this also works for people who are too heavy, for a standard scale. You don’t need to buy a special—and expensive—scale, and you don’t even have to center yourself over the scales.
