Rowling’s Harry Potter series has sold more than 250 million books and given her a net worth of $1 billion. It’s a “true Cinderella story,” especially since it happened within a 10-year span.

Next year, she’ll be worth even more, after netting a few hundred million from the latest movie adapted from her best-selling books, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. But has Pottermania peaked? Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” the second film, released in late 2002, took in $866 million—$100 million short of the record set by the first film, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.” Mattel, maker of Harry Potter toys, has also reported declining sales. But a legion of fans is still eagerly waiting for Rowling to finish writing the next Potter installment—the sixth of seven. That’s not going to happen very soon,” Rowling recently wrote on her Web site.
