PARENTAL UPDATE

Dear Michael;

Some thirty years ago something happened you should know.

A patch of windowed sunlight lay upon your bed in such a way that you reached out your small, infant hand. I tried to make you understand why you could never catch and hold that fascinating spot of gold.

I looked at you and shook my head. “You can catch sunlight,” I said, no more than you can reach the moon.”

Now, looking back, I see how soon impossibilities depart as man pursues his cosmic art. The moon is reached; and now, of course, sunlight is harnessed like a horse. But, you, when much too young to doubt, already had it figured out.
