Whale Statistics

No! It’s not a demonstration of whale yoga - -

it’s one whale’s head and another whale’s fluke

SEA STATISTICS

How big is a humpback whale’s eyeball?

------and lots of other cool facts.

The largest animal that you’ll probably be lucky enough to see during your lifetime is the humpback whale. At full adulthood, these mammals measure 40 to 45 feet in length and can weight up to 80,000 tons. (That’s 160,000 pounds)

True, there are larger whales; blue whales, bowhead whales, sperm whales, fin whales, gray whales and right whales can all exceed the size and weight of the humpback whale. While those whales are larger, you’re much less likely to ever encounter them in the wild, especially if you continue your whale watching here in Hawaii. The largest land animal, the elephant is significantly smaller than a whale. The African elephant reaches a length of just 25 feet and weights a mere 16,500 pounds.

Want some more startling humpback statistics?

Here goes:

* The eye of a humpback whale is about the size of a large orange.

* Humpback whales don’t have external ear flaps. Instead, there is a barely discernable half-inch ear slit on each side of the whale’s head.

* The tail fin (fluke) of a adult humpback whale measures 10 to 15 feet across. The pectoral fins also measure about 15 feet in length.

* Calves average 13 to 15 feet in length and weigh 1 ton (2,000 pounds) at birth.

* The esophagus of a humpback whale is about the size of a grapefruit. Its throat can expand to only about 10 inches (not quite wide enough to swallow Jonah)

* The brain of an adult humpback whale weights 10 to 14 Pounds

* Just like humans, humpback whales have wax in their ear canals. The ear wax plug of a humpback whale can be 3 feet long!

There are still large numbers of humpback whales off the coast of beautiful Maui. If you haven’t been whale watching yet, please don’t miss the opportunity to see these gentle giants right up real close , You’ll never forget it. I promise.
